My Everest is: Overcoming Fear, Providing Opportunity
BlueSkEyes
I am afraid of heights, a terrible hang up for a climber. I'm doing everything I can to overcome it, including increasing my comfort zone through exposure. I need more opportunities to push my limits, but travel is costly. Climbing has been my refuge this past year, but teaching is still where my passion is. In my classroom I try to give my students the chance to take ownership of our planet and themselves as independent human beings. These things are hard to accomplish when their only connection to the outdoors is the walk to the bus in the morning. I found my solution in Summit for Someone. This organization asks you to raise money, and in exchange takes you on a high altitude adventure. The funds you raise go to Big City Mountaineers - a group that takes city kids to the wild where they can fall in love with the outdoors and discover themselves. Sound perfect? I think so. These groups will help me do what I can't. This is my Everest! |
Climbing every chance I get, saving money to apply for a Summit for Someone trip, and using my job to reach at-risk students, bringing them outside and teaching them about our precious planet often. Committing - It's scary to commit, but having a goal in mind like a Summit for Someone trip would give me a deadline and force me to prepare. |
